Wow, well what can we say? We are back on UK soil after 6 days of an ‘Elevator’ of emotions. The majority of which have been through the roof. The main quotes throughout the trip were “We’re not really here are we?” and “Our mums will wake us up in a minute shouting that we’re late for school!”… It was that kind of dreamy feeling that lasted the whole trip!Five down to earth lads who love to play T. Rex tunes ended up in the U.S of A playing a gig in Don Hill’s meeting many idols and making many new friends. That is the long and short of it…. And it felt so good!
The run up to the trip was hectic and the organizer Marc Regan (thank you, thank you thank you!) did a fantastic job in creating the perfect tribute night to Bolan whilst dealing with a multitude of pressures. Marc R - We are eternally grateful to you for giving us this opportunity and for your hospitality.
The gig itself began with a set from Rarn who were met with a great respect and response by the crowd. Steve Conte from the New York Dolls performed a blistering set with his band The Frequencies, who played the best version of Rip Off we’ve heard in a long time. We chatted with the band backstage and had a great laugh, a great bunch of guys with no ‘rock star’ aloofness.
Eric Paparazzi then wowed the crowd with his renditions of T.Rex classics. Performing to his personally produced backing tracks he performed Raw Ramp and Planet Queen, both of which would certainly do well in today’s chart if released.
Frankenstein 3000 then took to the stage and played like the stars they truly are. With Rachel Bolan guesting on bass, they performed a great version on 20th Century Boy. Great meeting you guys, especially Jonny who was a lifesaver regarding music equipment, making sure we had everything we needed, thanks man!!
The Rolan Bolan Band were next up, introduced by the one and only Tony Visconti! An extremely nice guy who was more than happy to chat and pose for pictures, he’s a great idol of ours for obvious reasons and it was an honour to meet him. Rolan, Vinny, Dave and Johnny were joined on stage by Tony Mann, a well respected percussionist/drummer throughout the U.S music scene. He fitted in seamlessly and helped create an energetic and heartfelt set. It rocked and it was great to see Rolan again.
Finally, we closed the night with a set that included all the classics and renditions of Cadillac, Baby Strange and…. oh it was all kind of an adrenalin blur but we know it went down well and the stage was well and truly invaded for the Get It On (Bang a Gong) finale!! A great night that will never be forgotten.
A few tanx to a few people and apologies if we miss anyone. First and foremost, a great big thank you to Marc Regan, without whom none of this would have been possible. Thanks too to his family and friends for their hospitality… Matt, Simon, Scott, Emmi, Sage, Angie, Johnny, Mikey, etc! Tanx to all the people we met during the gig and for the e-mails and comments after, we are truly flattered and grateful. Dee, Coll and hubbys it was great to finally meet you all! You were really great company and glad you had a fantastic time. We really appreciate you making the effort to come and support us and the bands at the gig and for all you did to attempt to accommodate UK fans. Thank you. Last but not least - The Brid Boys! Vinny, Dave and Johnny were the perfect trip buddies, giving us nothing but giggles the whole time!.... Nice one lads, we had a ball! Xx
Let’s not forget that this gig was all for Charity too. All money raised went to Breast Cancer Research. I’m sure that Bolan would have been proud that so many people made the effort to pay tribute to him and raise money for a good cause.
On a final note, tanx also to those people who have showed respect and maturity regarding certain events leading up to and during the trip. Those people were aware that it was a private matter and kept their distance. Hopefully our statement on the fan club cleared the air and people now realise that there have been deep personal issues with individual members of the band and also that last minute alterations beyond our control led to people having to make alternative accommodation arrangements, which were readily available at no extra cost. Issues of us not wanting to accommodate people for reasons such as arrogance or being ‘too big for our boots’ are silly and anyone who knows us will realise that this simply isn’t the case. We are Bolan fans the same as anyone else and anyone who deems us any higher than that are disillusioned. Tanx for your continued support and those who feel it necessary not to support us any longer… we wish you all the best for the future. Keep A Little Marc In Your Heart. xx
